![]() A 2-track promo EP from a London-based band fronted by two french musicians, Sarrane and Idir Brouk. A 'unique vocal style' is just too easy a way to describe them - those of you who remember the Television Personalities will know what that means - a slightly squeaky voice, almost childlike phrasing (they even sing 'to be a silly girl and be in all my dreams' on the first track bringing to mind 'Silly Girl' by those early 80's post punk alternatives). I didn't like it at all to begin with but it quickly hooked me and the melodies began to jump into my head while I least expected it. The first song Break The Spell is a slightly shambling affair - strummed guitar a la Smiths, words that end up as 'da da dada da dadada'. Good, but not ground breaking. Fireworks has more muscle, a bite in the vocal delivery and in the guitar work. There's a backing (maybe treated vocals or maybe synthesizer) that just adds even more to a great, energetic song. If this track gets heard enough then it will be a mainstay of pre-gig indie music everywhere. I often, in private, use the phrase 'wimpy English indie' to mean melodic wispy vocals, strummed guitar, and bouncy rhythms. This is actually a term of affection meant to differentiate English charm and songwriting talent (or Irish in the case of The Divine Comedy) from the sonic attack of much US music. That does describe The Archers in my terms but what I can't describe so easily is the warm feelings that they evoke. Apart from a desire to bop around the room, I found myself smiling, feeling relaxed, feeling happy. On just the evidence of two tracks, I can say they are unique and a bit special. They will be great live. |
