Watching is kind of like The Go-Betweens in its bouncy and varied rhythmic guitar parts. Sounded very good when played on Raw Talent this week. The second track Not So Fast is a delicate vignette of quiet heartbreak with effective backing harmonies. A very special song. There's something about the way that The Lodger finish the lines of songs - it leaves space for the emotional impact to hit.
I remember the Television Personalities were a favourite band for me in the early 80s and there are some comparisons with The Lodger - particularly with Ben Siddall's voice and their insistence in creating perfect pop songs with an alternative feel. Similarities also in the human concerns of the lyrics and the telling of stories of delicious sadness.
