Mondo

Before The Fall May 2004

Mondo are a London band who have released a few EPs through their own Moof records. The opening track of this album Slowstar is an instrumental that is just perfect - a seven minute guitar epic building up in tension and sonic overload. But having grabbed the Godspeed You Black Emperor's crown they go straight on to kick Sonic Youth up the backside, step on Ikara Colt's toes, and jump on their own bandwagon with Against The Numbers. Of course, there's no way they can keep up that intensity and their more melodic and sensitive side takes over. This is perhaps the real band - melody with strength. Only on one track (Something Else) do they stray over into just sounding like copyists. It took a number of plays to really get under my skin but it was all worth it. Mondo play intense, beautiful, and inspiring music.
