This was not an album I liked for the first few listens. Too many pop melodies and
not enough concentrated rocking to get my teeth into. But persistence can be a virtue
and with music as accomplished as this. When I first heard the name 'The Sad Song Co.'
I expected some truly great, miserable music from someone who had named himself that.
Certain songs live up to that expectation, The Everlasting Mile is emotional and
affecting.Deep Cover has a beautiful chorus of 'I’m not a good man, I'm a bad man…I've
got them all fooled into thinking I'm a good man'. It reminds me of The The's Infected in
it's melodic structure and vocal effects. I still feel that there's too many chords
underlying the music – it's a bit too busy. The overall effect is really very pleasant
– and a particularly fine vocal performance.
